Potts started almost three years ago, when I was working on Fifty Days at Iliam with Amanda Jill Robinson and Sara Outing, and falling in deep-and-profound-artistic-love with each of them. I approached Amanda one day, and said I had this kooky idea for a Mrs. Potts play. All I knew was that she would play Potts, and the Beast would be a figure in the background. Separately, Sara and I dreamed about producing a shadow puppet play together.
Fast forward three years! Amanda, Sara and I have made so much more art together. Potts remained a seedling - a one-page google document in the depths of my internet archive. In the winter, I was admitted to grad school. I knew I wanted to make another show with Amanda and Sara before I left. I brought up Potts. They said yes. And here we are!
This piece was co-created by the three of us, over the last month, with generous and invaluable collaboration with Maura Krause, who served as an outside eye. It was created almost entirely between the hours of 10 pm and 10 am, at the beginnings and ends of full work days. It was created with the intention of having fun. This is important.
Potts has grown into something far beyond what we initially intended. In many ways, it is the culmination of a three year conversation about what it means to be a storyteller, a theatre artist, and a female-bodied non-ingenue in this complicated and often unforgiving industry. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.
